the league of extraordinary gentlemen is a superhero tale set in victorian england. using characters from the horror and sci-fi literature of that time, it builds a team of complex characters, some likeable, some not so much. and pits them against the villains of the same era. this book concerns the building of the team and the foiling of a plot to destroy london. the second book, loosely based on 'war of the worlds' is even better.
if your only knowledge of this story is the terrible movie with sean connery, forget about that, it really doesn't do the books justice at all.
